Grounding when anxiety feels high

Published 2026-05-03 · From Avital Cohen, MSW

When anxiety is high, it can feel as if your mind and body are moving faster than you can manage. Grounding is one way to help yourself come back to the present moment.

Try naming what is here

You can gently look around and name five things you see, four things you feel, three things you hear, two things you smell and one thing you taste.

You do not have to force yourself to be calm

The goal is not to push anxiety away. The goal is to give your body a few signals that you are here, now, in this moment.

Use something steady

You might feel your feet on the floor, notice the chair supporting you, hold a warm drink, or slowly breathe out. Small anchors can help when everything feels too much.

When more support may help

If anxiety is showing up often or making daily life harder, therapy can give you a place to understand it more personally and find ways to respond with more support.

What I write here is general information and personal reflection. It is not a substitute for therapy, diagnosis or emergency support.
